Looking for a place to take your furry friend for a walk? Coronado Dog Beach is the perfect spot! This beach is located in Coronado, California and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also a great place to let your dog run around and play in the sand. In this blog post, we will provide everything you need to know about Coronado Dog Beach including directions, hours of operation, and more!
Coronado Dog Beach (North Beach)
Coronado’s North Beach is the only beach in Coronado where dogs are allowed. It is located off of Ocean Blvd, at the most northern end of the beach next to the rear entrance of the Naval Station and across from Sunset Park.
This beach has picturesque views of Point Loma and the Hotel del Coronado.
Dogs must be leashed until reaching the designated areas indicated by signs leading up to the beach, but after reaching this point dogs are free to roam.
Make sure to obey these rules as Coronado Animal Patrol has a zero-tolerance policy for unleashed dogs and fines can run up to $500. Dogs are not allowed on the south side of the beach, so make sure to follow the path and stay to the north side. The city provides free dog bags at the entrance to the beach as well as an area where you can rinse your dog off when you are all done and ready to go home.
The dog beach is open 24/7. Parking is off-street and because this beach is so popular, it fills up quickly, especially on the weekend during the summer months. No food or dog treats are allowed, as this can create a situation for aggressive behavior.
There are no restrooms here, but if you walk farther south you will see one. All dogs must have a current and valid license and be free from any contagious diseases to visit. Excessive barking and aggressive behavior are not permitted at any time.
Fun in the Sun for You and Your Canine Friend
This place is great to visit because it has so much more to offer than your typical visit to a standard dog park.
Anyone that owns a dog and loves to tan in the sun, play in the sand or take a dip in the ocean should go here since you can do what you enjoy while your pooch also has fun and gets exercise.
Please note that there are lifeguard towers here but not always with active duty lifeguards, so take caution with the safety of anyone or any pets that get in the water.
You’ll often find groups of people and pets here mingling and even various pet events are held here on occasion. A favorite among our canine friends is to play frisbee or fetch a ball thrown out in the surf and they simply love it too.
Spectacular Beach Views
Just a dog beach would be enough for most people, but Coronado is even more amazing because of the beautiful views it offers.
You get a nearly complete view of Point Loma from the shore, which is also worth a visit on it’s own, but seeing it from a distance hanging out over the ocean is also great.
Off to the South, you’ll find Hotel del Coronado sitting right on the beach. This massive hotel is quite a sight. During the warm months of the year, you’ll usually see people on sailboats out on the ocean. As if this place didn’t have enough already, Sunset Park right across the street has a really nice kids’ playground.
Beach Rules & Coronado Naval Base Warnings
Make sure you follow all of the posted rules here to ensure that this beach continues to be dog-friendly. While you should be following all rules, there are a few particular things that are worth pointing out. First, make sure you have a leash when you visit. This is necessary when entering the beach and leaving it. While the dog beach itself is off-leash, it is still needed to get there and back.
Second, watch out for the boundary signs. These will mark where you are allowed to go with your dog. Stiff fines are enforced for people violating these rules.
You’ll also find clean-up stations for dog waste bags here, but you should still try to bring your own because you can be fined for neglecting to pick up your pet here.
The final thing worth pointing out is that the North side of Coronado Beach borders the Coronado Naval Base. This is a US Naval Station that operates both on land and in the water, so they have areas sectioned off that you shouldn’t enter.
Also notice that other areas can be entered but you may be subject to search being there. As long as you simply stay on Coronado Beach itself, you have nothing to worry about, but it is good to know about the presence of this place before visiting so it doesn’t catch you off-guard.
