Dusty Rhodes Neighborhood Park
Dusty Rhodes Dog Park is a large grassy fenced-in dog park nestled inside the Dusty Rhodes Community Park. It is located between Nimitz Blvd. and Sunset Cliffs Blvd, right off of the 8 Freeway, and only a few miles from Ocean Beach.
Plenty of off-street parking is available in two lots on both sides of the park. The park has a gazebo, an enclosed picnic area, a children’s playground and large grassy fields. There are bathrooms located just outside of the dog park for your convenience.
Dogs are allowed on all parts of the park but must be leashed while outside of the designated dog park area. Directly across the street from Dusty Rhodes is Robb Athletic Field, a large sports park with a skateboard park, athletic clubs and several playing fields.
Dusty Rhodes Dog Park is a fully fenced-in park with separate areas for both large and small dogs. Both areas have large shady trees, plastic chairs, picnic tables and water fountains for both dogs and humans. There are several doggie bag stations and trashcans located throughout both areas.
There is an array of terrain, grass, dirt and sand, great options for your pooch to enjoy. Many local meet-up groups use this park for different breeds, so on any given day you may see a large group of happy dogs running around the park, tails wagging.
Off-Leash Areas for Small & Large Pets
This park is open 24 hours a day, except for Wednesday mornings when it’s closed for maintenance from 6 am – 12 pm. Dogs must be up to date on all vaccines and have a current and valid dog license with the city of San Diego to be able to visit.
There are separate fenced-in enclosures here for both large and small dogs, with 30 pounds being the dividing weight limit. Both sections are fairly similar and offer features like dog waste stations, shade-covered benches and grassy fields. You can also find rules signs for these areas as well as for the entire dog park to ensure that you are following all of the city regulations.
There are separate entrances for these two areas. Both of them feature double gated entry to ensure that your dog can’t escape when someone else is entering or leaving the park. In general, the large dog run is more open and exposed to much more sun than the area for small canines, which contains numerous large shade trees along the sides and even in the middle of the enclosure. In the hot summer months, the small run here is more comfortable for relaxing while your pooch gets some exercise.
Dog Park Features
Overall, there are not of ton of special or extremely up-to-date features about Dusty Rhodes dog park, but it does contain the essentials like water drinking fountains, benches and dog waste bags. You’ll commonly find dogs simply enjoying each others company here, running around the fields and playing.
The most common type of seating available here is a plastic chair, but there are a couple of large benches and even picnic tables along the edges of each enclosure. One of the things that is easily overlooked is the dog waste bag station. These are actually attached to the chain-link fence on the interior of the fenced areas. Another pleasant thing about Dusty Rhodes is the widely available parking, so you don’t have to worry about walking far or not being able to find parking at all.
